Nathan has been working as a licensed therapist for almost three years and has been in the field of mental health for 6 years. He started as a skills worker seeing people in their homes. No matter the environment, he learned to join authentically. This helped shape him into the therapist he is today. Nathan believes it led him to see therapy as a collaboration, not just a service rendered.
Multiple theories inform his therapeutic style but the two most fundamental ones would have to be Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Schema Therapy. Nathan believes most people can benefit from exploring their thought and behavior patterns and focus on replacing negative tendencies with more accurate, positive ones. These negative patterns are usually informed by our environment earlier in life: maybe that means parents, friends, school, or neighborhood. Sometimes we are shaped by something dysfunctional that we automatically follow, without thought or intent. Oftentimes what we learn is not even dysfunctional; it just no longer matches our environment. Nathan believes it is beneficial for anyone to grow in their ability to make sense out of where their tendencies come from and to learn from them.
Nathan has found that even outside of work he gravitates towards growth. Whether that is watching his children grow or doing projects around the house, he finds it very satisfying to see things grow, change, or improve. For now it is playgrounds, tile floors, and light fixtures, but he can see it morphing into gardening, cooking, and go-carts (or whatever the kids are into).
