Shawn O’Laughlin, PhD, LP
PhD and Master’s Degree: Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL
Bachelor’s Degree: Quincy College, Quincy, IL
Licensure: Licensed Psychologist
Dr. O’Laughlin joined PrairieCare in early September 2011, starting in the Edina Clinic. Before that he worked for nine years at PrairieCare’s “parent” organization, Prairie St. John’s in Fargo, ND. His clinical practice at Prairie St. John’s (PSJ) involved primarily individual & family therapy as well as psychological testing with adult inpatients, many of whom had both mental illnesses and chemical addictions. Currently Dr. O’Laughlin is engaged in the Edina Adult Intensive Outpatient Program, facilitating a process group, conducting family and individual therapy sessions, and performing some psychological testing. He also sees clinic outpatients for individual and family therapy and psychological assessment/testing.
Dr. O’Laughlin’s primary clinical approach is cognitive-behavioral therapy, though he is also eclectic enough to utilize other psychological theories and techniques as needed and as helpful for the particular patient. He believes very much in finding a person’s strengths and “fanning the flames of health”, rather than focusing too much on pathology and problems.
