Nathan has been working as a licensed therapist for almost three years and has been in the field of mental health for six years. He began his career as a skills worker, visiting people in their homes. He learned to participate authentically in any situation. This helped shape Nathan into the therapist he is today and led him to view therapy as a collaborative effort rather than a service rendered.

Multiple theories inform Nathan’s therapeutic style, but the two most fundamental are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Schema Therapy. He believes most people can benefit from exploring their thought and behavior patterns and focusing on replacing negative tendencies with more accurate, positive ones. These negative patterns are usually influenced by early environment, which could include parents, friends, school, or neighborhood. Sometimes we are shaped by something dysfunctional that we automatically follow without thought or intent. Oftentimes, what we learn is not even dysfunctional; it just no longer matches our environment. Nathan believes that it is beneficial for anyone to improve their ability to understand and learn from their tendencies.

Nathan has discovered that, even outside of work, he gravitates towards growth. Whether that is watching his children grow or doing projects around the house, he finds it very satisfying to see things grow, change, or improve. For now, it is playgrounds, tile floors, and light fixtures, but he can see it morphing into gardening, cooking, and go-karts (or whatever the kids are into).
