PrairieCare to expand, new psychiatric hospital planned for Brooklyn Park

Jun 10, 2014 by admin

PrairieCare announces official plans for a new child and adolescent psychiatric hospital located in Brooklyn Park. The new facility is expected to be open by fall of 2015 and will be PrairieCare’s sixth location in Minnesota.

PrairieCare’s new state-of-the-art psychiatric hospital will be a privately-funded 72,000 square foot free-standing facility that will include 50 inpatient beds for children and adolescents, the largest of its kind in Minnesota. This new facility will have the capacity to treat over 1,500 youth annually who currently struggle to find options for intensive and specialized care. PrairieCare currently operates a 25-bed hospital in Maple Grove that runs at capacity most of the year. Joel V. Oberstar, MD, CEO and Chief Medical Officer of PrairieCare states, “there are hundreds of youth in the Twin Cities in psychiatric emergencies who wait for hours in emergency departments or have to travel tremendous distances to get the care they need. The addition of these beds will greatly increase patients’ access to high quality, compassionate mental health care.”

Patients and families receiving care at PrairieCare will notice the therapeutic and awe-inspiring architectural designs that have become the trademark of the organization’s treatment settings. PrairieCare provides cutting-edge evidenced-based treatments, multi-specialty clinical care and coordinated treatment from the state’s largest group of Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists. According to Todd Archbold, PrairieCare’s Chief Development Officer, these factors have contributed to numerous awards as well as a growth rate of 35% each year since 2010.

The new hospital will increase service capacity and complement PrairieCare’s existing continuum-of-care that includes outpatient clinic, intensive outpatient and partial hospital programs and inpatient services. PrairieCare has been recognized as a fast-growing provider of psychiatric services in the Twin Cities. The new location will create an additional 200 jobs. Dr. Oberstar notes that, “the new facility will nourish the needs of our patients and enhance the ability of our staff to provide high quality care. New clinicians and trainees will be shaped by what the facility has to offer, and veteran clinicians will appreciate the attention to detail, all designed to enhance the patient care experience.”
